Take your career abroad with Global Business Practicum and get work experience overseas.

Travel overseas, work in a small consulting team, and tackle real business challenges with one of our industry partners. With master classes from local leaders, exploring cultural landmarks, and networking with professionals, this course will be a highlight of your degree.

You’ll begin the project virtually before going overseas to work full time in your host organisations office, guided by an industry mentor.

Spending two weeks abroad will significantly enhance your employability after university. The practical experience and international exposure gained will help you stand out in the competitive graduate job market.

  • In-country placement dates:Ìý

    Monday 20th January 2025 to Thursday 6th February 2025.

    During this course you are required to spend two weeks overseas in Jakarta.

    Your accommodation will be booked by the Career Accelerator team once you have paid your deposit and been enrolled in the course. Students are not permitted to organise their own accommodation for this course.

    Rooms will be shared, with 2 students of the same gender being allocated per room. Students who wish to have their own room will be charged an additional fee.

    Pre-departure workshops:

    As part of COMM3020 you are expected to attend 4 pre-departure workshops in person. These workshops will include your team allocation, an introduction to your host company, guest speakers from industry and a pre-departure briefing to help you succeed during your time overseas.

    Post-experience debrief:

    Upon returning to Australia, you will attend a debrief session to reflect on your time overseas, provide feedback, and discuss how to articulate your experience for future career success.

    This session will not appear in your timetable. You will be advised of the date, time and location of this workshop during your pre-departure sessions.

Course essentials

  • GBP is available only to UNSW Business School students who:

    • Have completed a minimum of 72 UoC by the commencement of this courseÌý
    • Have room in their degree for this course
    • Are in good academic standingÌý
    • ÌýHave completedÌýÌý(Student-enrolment key: Career_Accelerator) OR COMM1999 myBCom First Year Portfolio
    • You must have a valid passport and visa (as required).
    • You must be based in Sydney during program dates.Ìý
    • You must be able to cover the cost of the GBP program fee, airfare, visa and living costs.
    • You must be able to attend the 4 pre-departure workshops in person and the post-practicum debrief session.
    • You must be able to travel overseas during the in-country placement dates.  

    Special consideration will be given for potential clashes with your other exams during travel component of the course. Ìý

    Enrolment

    As enrolments are restricted, you cannot enrol yourself into this course.

    The process is:

    Step 1: Lodge your application

    Step 2: Within 2 weeks after the application closing date, we will inform you of the outcome.Ìý If approved, students must complete the program fee via the link provided.

    Step 3: UNSW Business School will enrol approved students into the course.Ìý At this stage, please ensure you have space in your program.

  • This course has an additional fee of $2500 which includes accommodation, orientation activities, tours and other program events. Ìý

    This fee is non-refundable once you have been enrolled in the course.

    Course fees, airfare and living costs are separate and must be covered by you.Ìý

  • This course is graded on a Satisfactory (SY)/Unsatisfactory (FL) basis. Please refer to the course handbook for detailed assessment information.

  • During the Global Business Practicum Jakarta, students worked with a real client on a real business problem as part of a consulting team, supported throughout by an industry mentor, your lecturer and the Career Accelerator team. 

    Industry hosts

    • ÌýAssess the feasability of entering new markets or expanding its existing footprint within Indonesia or internationally.
    • : Students will develop Solar Leasing Business Strategies to accelerate Indonesia's Solar Power Development and to explore Cross-Border Opportunities between Australia and Indonesia.
    • : Students conducted research and make recommendations framework on better approaches for 91³ÉÈ˰涶Òô Tester Club in the future to reach new business sector and to create suitable products.
  • Industry Hosts (2023 T3):

    • : This project aimed to leverage your business acumen and strategic thinking to provide recommendations on the development of a product using OpenAI's ChatGPT model. Students delved into the capabilities of ChatGPT, identified potential market opportunities, explored potential use cases, devised a business model and develop a strategic implementation plan for a product that capitalizes on these opportunities.Ìý
    • : The company aimed to achieve a superior position in the startup ecosystem that is conducive to promoting and supporting the growth of technology-facing startups in Toronto, Canada. With the forward-looking initiative, they were in the process of introducing a campaign/project that not only eased the process of connecting cloud accountants to SMEs/startups, but also urges Smes/ new startups to use cloud accounting in their own businesses.  
    • : Ledo Media was expanding to Australia market in 2024. The project required the team to do analysis on market research of the advertising industry of Australia. 
    • : This project sought to engage proactive business students to undertake an in-depth market analysis and evaluation of the Australian non-governmental organization (NGO) sector.Ìý
    • : EnergyGlare Token is the utility token of the EnergyGlare platform. It is used for priority access to the platform services and well as for governance. As EnergyGlare Token will be traded freely outside EnergyGlare, the company was looking for further analysis and improving the utility, Tokenomics and ultimately the value of the Token.  
    • : One of the projects involved enhancing Food and Beverage performance and elevate service quality of The Drawing Room and Private Dining in hotel. The second project involved analyzing strategies to optimize hotel performance and to become the best luxury hotel in Hong Kong.
    • : The project consisted in answering the following questions:
      1. ÌýHow could the company rejuvenate Chinese cuisine and let consumers know Chinese cooking is far more than stir-fry and continue to expand the Chinese cooking occasions at home?
      2. How could the company let consumers know Lee Kum Kee products are value for money and to elevate Lee Kum Kee’s premium brand positioning?
      3. HowÌýcould the company let consumers know Lee Kum Kee products are value for money and to elevate Lee Kum Kee's premium brand positioning?
    • : The project question to be answered was: as consumer’s wealth continues to rise, they are increasing looking for better life and wealth protection. What does this mean to General Insurance providers?

  • Industry Hosts (2023 T2):

    • : This project enlightened and uplifted the intern’s business consulting skills having real cases and hand-on experiences and utilise their knowledge of business in multidimensional areas. This programme allowed them to discover their niche area(s) of business and/or management consulting, namely HR transformation, business process improvement, internal control, risk management, and internal audit.Ìý
    • : To maximize the hotel’s R&B revenue and gain competitive advantage above the competitors, Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok aimed to assess the target customers and conduct a comparative competitor analysis in order to develop an implementation strategy to optimize the hotel’s R&B outlet performance.Ìý
    • : This project took Thailand as case market to work on key questions. 
      • How canÌýBlackmores build PA as key growth drivers for business in consumers, customers and total business financial impact.
      • What should be KPI measures and scorecards, targets, commission scheme for PA would make sense to the business. 
      • Are there any technology or tools that might help PA performance and business.
