Telecommunications Engineering

How do we communicate information at a distance? How can you video call someone in another country? How do high-resolution images or streaming videos fly across the internet? The answer: Telecommunications Engineering. Telecommunication Engineers design, build and manage systems that transmit these data signals to keep information flowing.

Technology is advancing at break-neck speeds, which means demand for people who understand and can manage this technology is also growing. You’ll graduate with the skills to design, create and manage technology and systems such as:

  • Landline and mobile phone service

  • Internet and pay television 

  • Broadband signals

  • Smart sensors.

According to Job Outlook, the number of people working Telecommunications has steadily grown in recent years, from 8,300 in 2014 to 11,200 in 2019.

My fondest memories of the Co-op Program come from the year I spent in the industry. I was given the opportunity to work in Newcastle for 6 months, which was a great way to learn to live by myself as well as build my technical knowledge. I loved learning about a new city and the independence it provided me. The placements provide you with an edge over the competition particularly when graduate roles are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain.
