Q&A with Petroleum Engineering Student

Abdul聽Mu'Izz Bin Haji Shazli聽is a final-year student studying聽a聽Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Petroleum)聽at UNSW.聽We spoke to聽Mu鈥橧zz聽about why he chose to study petroleum engineering at UNSW and聽about his involvement with聽聽as a committee member.聽

Why did you choose to study Petroleum Engineering?聽

I chose a degree in聽辫别迟谤辞濒别耻尘听别苍驳颈苍别别谤颈苍驳聽because in Brunei where I come from, this degree is sought after in the job market as the main contribution to the economy is derived from hydrocarbon exports. With this degree, it could help to create聽sustainable development in the energy industry specifically聽oil and聽gas industry for Brunei.聽

What do you like about your degree and what are your favourite classes?聽

This degree is known to be a challenging聽course;聽hence it could better prepare me to compete in the competitive job market. As this is my final term, I enjoyed all my classes as most of them equipped me with the necessary skills and technical aspects required for the industry.聽I would聽also聽choose聽聽as my favourite class.聽

Do you hold a Scholarship and what has it meant for you to be awarded this Scholarship?聽

The聽Government of Brunei through the聽Ministry of聽Education has offered to fully sponsor my education in UNSW.聽I feel聽honoured to be selected for this scholarship amongst other potential candidates. It聽motivates聽me to study hard and push myself to excel academically and improve my social skills through joining clubs, social events and so on.聽聽

What are your favourite things to do in or around UNSW and how can students make the most out of the UNSW experience?聽

Unfortunately, I did not聽manage聽to spend much time in UNSW as I聽returned聽to my home country due to Covid-19. However, I joined the聽聽(SPEUNSW)聽as a committee member and it gave聽me聽opportunities to broaden my knowledge and skills. It also provided聽professional connections within the聽oil and聽gas industry through talks organized by UNSW and SPEUNSW.聽

What do you think is the relevance of your degree and why is it important that it exists?聽

This degree is important as the world is moving towards cleaner energy supply聽and聽the reduction of聽carbon聽dioxide emissions.聽This degree would prepare me with the necessary skills and knowledge to extract hydrocarbons聽in聽the most efficient way聽with聽minimum emissions. It would also help to reduce the amount of聽carbon in the atmosphere through CO2聽sequestration.聽

What do you want to do after completing your degree? How do you think your studies at UNSW will help in your career aspirations?聽

After completing the degree, I would brace myself to enter the competitive industry with the skills and knowledge聽that I聽have gained in UNSW,聽to be an engineer that can聽compete not only in Brunei but also globally. UNSW has provided me聽with vast resources聽throughout the degree such as great lecturers, industry聽software聽and聽learning materials.聽I聽am聽now聽confident that I could compete with other graduates from around the world.聽

Can you share something about the resources & energy industry that might interest someone considering studies and a career in this industry?聽

Some energy companies聽organize聽roadshows for prospective students for them to have a glimpse of what the industry has to offer.聽聽

What advice would you give to a new/future student on how to excel at your degree?聽

For prospective students, I would advise them to keep working hard throughout your studies as it is really challenging and聽to聽always be proactive in class to prevent yourself from falling behind.聽
