Summer is nearly over and for some of you, that means it鈥檚聽time聽to聽start packing your things and moving to a different city for school or uni. When I moved out of home to come to聽UNSW, I was relatively clueless about how much stuff to bring and forgot some pretty crucial聽items. Luckily for you, I鈥檝e summed up some of the key聽things聽to bring along when you move out of home.聽
1. Medicare card聽
Most teenagers share a Medicare card with their families/guardians.聽When you move out, it鈥檚 important to have your own card as it allows you to access rebated聽(= reduced fee)聽medical services like the doctor聽&聽medications.聽It鈥檚 super easy to apply as long as you鈥檙e over 15:聽聽
2. Room decorations聽
Bringing some decorations from home is an easy way to make your new digs feel more personal and help with some of the homesickness. I鈥檇 recommend pictures of friends and family!聽
3. Year 12 study notes聽
I鈥檓 a bit of a hoarder鈥 I kept all of my worksheets and notes from Year 7 to 12. When I moved out of home, I only brought along my HSC聽materials聽(RIP the Year 8 chemistry worksheets!). These聽have come in handy on multiple occasions, particularly during maths lectures!聽
4. Money聽card聽
If you鈥檙e living away from your聽family, having easy access to money is a must. Make sure you organise some sort of savings/debit card聽a fair while聽before聽you聽leave聽home聽as they can take a while to聽come in the mail and you want to make sure you have money on arrival.聽
5. Clothes hangers聽
Why fold your聽clothes聽when you can just leave them on hangers聽and pack them聽in a box? That said, if you鈥檙e one for folding, make sure you don鈥檛 forget聽clothes聽hangers聽as this will delay your聽unpacking聽(and lead to very crinkled clothes!).聽
6. Business outfit聽
鈥淲HAT鈥.business聽attire? I鈥檓 only 17!鈥.聽Whilst it might seem odd now, you鈥檒l thank me when you sign up for a networking event with a 鈥渂usiness casual鈥 dress code. There are lots聽of great networking聽events and opportunities at聽uni, so save yourself the cash聽& stress聽and bring聽an outfit聽from home.聽
7. Thongs聽
Whether you鈥檙e afraid of what bacteria might be lurking in the shower (Tinea聽anyone?) or you just want some easy slip聽ons聽for late-night Maccas聽trips, thongs/slides will be your best friend.聽
8. Calculator
The 鈥渓ow light鈥 of my聽first day of聽uni聽was undoubtedly聽wasting $40聽on a new calculator. It hadn鈥檛 even crossed my mind to bring聽one聽along.聽So,聽learn from聽my聽mistakes and save yourself the time and money!聽
9. UGG聽BOOTS聽
Believe me鈥o matter how little room you have in your suitcase, you聽must聽pack聽ugg聽boots. The joy of coming home from a long day of聽uni聽and slipping into聽uggies聽is unparalleled and will make you feel like you鈥檙e really at home.聽
