Research Abstract Background:聽Approximately 150 million people wear contact lenses (CL) globally. Of these, 50% experience discomfort during lens wear and 25% of wearers are likely to discontinue lens wear permanently. The etiology of contact lens discomfort (CLD) is multifactorial and could be due to changes to meibomian glands of the lids during lens wear. Meibomian glands dysfunction (MGD) results in increased evaporation of the tear film. MGD produces an abnormal meibum that is more viscous than the usual olive-oil-like secretion which can lead to severe inflammation and bacterial overgrowth that exacerbates the problem. Intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment, with or without meibomian gland expression, has been proven to be an effective therapy for improvement of signs and symptoms of MGD but it has not been fully evaluated as a treatment for contact lens discomfort.

Aim: The aim of the study is to evaluate the qualitative and quantitative changes in signs and symptoms of MGD and contact lens discomfort (CLD) following IPL treatment in contact lens wearers.

Methods: Single center, double masked, randomized prospective study will be conducted on 76 eyes of 38 subjects wearing contact lenses and experiencing CLD. Participants will be assigned randomly to one of the two treatment groups. The IPL treatment group will receive two IPL treatment sessions at 3-week intervals while control group will receive sham IPL treatments. Various clinical procedures will be performed and tear, meibum and ocular swabs will be collected pre and post IPL treatment. The expected outcomes are improvement in symptoms and signs of contact lens discomfort following IPL therapy.
