Associate Professor Jake Olivier spoke to ABC Radio National yesterday for their broadcast,
WA is the latest state to adopt the 'one metre rule' for cars passing cyclists, with a trial announced by the new Labor state government.
Minimum distances for cars passing cyclists have been endorsed as legislation - or are being trialled - in several Australian states, such as QLD, SA, ACT, NSW, TAS, and now WA.
QLD was one of the first adopters of the rule, and evidence suggests that many accidents and injuries have been averted. However, A/Prof Olivier claims that relevant, high quality data needs to be collected by the states to accurately ascertain the level of success of the measure.
