Associate Professor Samad Sepasgozar from the School of Built Environment at UNSW Arts, Design & Architecture has been named the published by The Australian newspaper. UNSW was also named as the world-leading research institution in the field of Architecture.
Since 2018, has named the top-performing researchers across 250 fields and eight disciplines to provide a comprehensive view of Australia鈥檚 best research. The methodology for the list uses big-data techniques to identify researchers and analyse public data about the quality and impact of their work.
Each Australian researcher and research organisation receives an impact score in each of the 250 fields of research equal to the number of citations for papers published (by the individual or the institution) in the top 20 journals of the field in the last five years. The analysis also identifies the best Australian researchers and institutions in the world.
鈥淭he recognition of our research impact is particularly important in the design, real estate, and building sectors, which require significant effort to transform compared to high-tech industries that actively invest in examining innovative solutions,鈥 A/Prof. Sepasgozar says. 鈥淔or example, if you look at the car industry, modern cars are now equipped with advanced tools that improve performance and energy efficiency and even offer the promise of driverless technology next, all for under a hundred thousand dollars.
鈥淥n the other hand, a flat costing at least a million dollars to the end user often doesn鈥檛 see much improvement in quality, performance, and user satisfaction compared to one built a decade ago.鈥
A/Prof. Sepasgozar says the pioneering approaches in his research can offer creative solutions to problems like the housing crisis and help develop innovative tools to transform the building industry for the better.
鈥淚 have been very open to interdisciplinary approaches and collaborations, which allowed me to tackle complex problems from different perspectives,鈥 A/Prof. Sepasgozar says. 鈥淔or instance, understanding how AI, intelligent systems, and computation can be effectively applied in sectors like building designs, real estate and construction, where technology adoption rates are among the lowest compared to high-tech sectors, and the productivity or quality is also not satisfactory in our sector.鈥
A/Prof. Sepasgozar says the recognition further drives his desire to help positively shape sustainable city developments into the future.
鈥淚f the building sector persists in using old-school methods to build hundreds of millions of homes globally by 2030, the negative impact will linger for decades,鈥 A/Prof. Sepasgozar says. 鈥淪o, I am very committed to responding to the urgent needs of millions experiencing homelessness or living in low-quality buildings, even in resourceful countries, through my research now and moving forward into the future.鈥
Professor Martin Holt from the Centre for Social Research in Health and Scientia Professor Andrew Martin from the School of Education were recognised as the national leaders in the fields of AIDS & HIV and Educational Psychology & Counselling research, respectively.
