We take a look back at the month that was for the UNSW sporting community.
March was packed with achievements across a variety of sports, with UNSW athletes setting records, earning titles, and making strong starts to their seasons. From Charlotte Wilson’s groundbreaking success in freestyle skiing to standout performances in cricket, athletics, and hockey, the month again highlighted the depth of talent within the UNSW sporting community.
Charlotte Wilson made history as the first Australian to win the FIS Mogul Skiing Rookie of the Year award. She followed this achievement with a gold medal in dual moguls at the FIS Freestyle event in Livigno, Italy. Her debut season included five finals appearances from six singles moguls starts, with two super finals. A stellar start to her career, Charlotte’s performance signals the arrival of a future Australian Olympian.
Tom Connolly etched his name in UNSW cricket history with a monumental 210 runs off 370 balls in 3rd grade—featuring twenty-two 4s and three 6s. His knock is the highest-ever 3rd grade innings and the fourth-highest across all UNSW grades. UNSW 3rd grade posted a massive 6/434 against UTS North Sydney in the quarterfinals before bowing out to St George in the semi-finals.
UNSWFC club captain Chloe Smith was unstoppable in the opening round of the 2025 NPL Women’s NSW campaign, scoring a hat-trick in a commanding 5-2 win over NWS Spirit FC. After three rounds, the team is sitting 6th on the ladder with a win, a draw, and a loss, showing promise for the season ahead.
UNSW Athletics shone at the 128th NSW State Open Championships, with 16 athletes competing in 13 finals and bringing home seven medals, including four state titles. Key performances included:
Tamsin Colley: Gold in the 800m PA Ambulant with a new Australian record and world best, lowering her previous record by 3 seconds, and another gold in the 1500m PA Ambulant with an Australian record.
Lachlan Raper: Gold in the 800m.

NBL Next Star and UNSW student Alex Toohey has officially declared for the NBA Draft after an impressive season with the Sydney Kings. In his second year as part of the Next Stars program, Toohey became a critical component for the Kings, starting in 25 of the 29 games he played. Averaging 10.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.4 steals per game, he also took home the Next Generation Award. Toohey is projected to be a second-round pick in June’s draft, with ESPN ranking him as the 37th best prospect on their latest top 100 big board - draft will be held on June 26th. We caught up with Alex at the end of last year to talk all things basketball and everything in between. Full story HERE.
UNSW Hockey Club had a strong start to the season, with both the Premier League 1 (PL1) and Metro League 1 (ML1) squads winning their respective trophies at the Hunter Cup. ML1 went back-to-back, while PL1 completed a three-peat, with both teams going undefeated. A combined PL3/SL1 squad also traveled to Canberra for a friendly against the University of Canberra, returning with the inaugural ‘Bilbo-Basher Uni Cup.’
