Alcohol advertising in disguise? How exposure to zero-alcohol products and promotions drives adolescents’ perceptions of alcohol
Zero-alcohol drinks contain <0.5% alcohol by volume but resemble alcohol in appearance and taste, and often share brands with full-strength alcohol brands. These drinks have become widely available and advertised in places freely accessible by children, such as supermarkets, where alcohol sales have traditionally been restricted in Australia to prevent harms. Dr Ashlea Bartram will present findings from two studies that investigated the extent to which exposure to zero-alcohol drinks and advertisements affects adolescents’ perceptions of full-strength alcohol products, providing evidence that zero-alcohol drinks can serve as surrogate marketing for alcohol.
