The School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Science鈥檚 (BABS) engagement with industry and government allows our faculty and students to develop the skills and networks necessary to translate and commercialise biotechnology and life science research.听

  • Our faculty and alumni are involved in commercial ventures in several start-ups and established companies:听

    • is a鈥痵olar bioengineering company focused on producing traditionally plant-derived natural products from light, water and carbon dioxide.听
    • Continuum Biosciences听is focused on developing innovative drugs to improve mitochondrial health by targeting metabolic disease and disorders.听
    • 鈥痬anufactures a proprietary form of Gamma 鈥 Glutamylcysteine (GCG) which is required to produce the powerful antioxidant Glutathione, a critical molecule required to maintain health.鈥
    • 听offers鈥痵kin testing services using a proprietary鈥痠n vitro鈥痟uman鈥痵kin technology. Read about this听.听
  • BABS has many partnerships with industry. A number of these partnerships have been鈥痑warded鈥, supporting partnerships with Microbiogen Pty Ltd, Royal Botanic Gardens, Domain Trust and Nutromics Pty Ltd.鈥疧ur鈥痯rovides鈥痯rotein production and purification services for academic and industry researchers.听听

    Other partnerships include:听

    • 鈥 a鈥痵olar bioengineering company focused on producing traditionally plant-derived natural products from light, water and carbon dioxide.听
    • Drop Bio听鈥 an Australian digital health and biotechnology company focused on measuring and tracking chronic inflammation. Drop Bio is located at BABS allowing companies to access and utilise university facilities, forging deeper relationships between the university and industry partners.听
    • 听鈥斕齛 biotech company focused on developing improved drug discovery processes and new drug modalities.
    • 听鈥 the leading Australian industry body representing and advocating for organisations in the global biotechnology and life sciences industry. BABS faculty are represented on the NSW AusBiotech Committee.听

  • BABS at UNSW is one of 13 national partners of听.听

    The Bridge Program delivers education programs equipping early and mid-career researchers, academics and entrepreneurs with the necessary knowledge and skills to successfully commercialise Australian pharmaceutical and biotechnology research.听

    The Bridge Program is supported by the government body MTPConnect, with industry-matched funding from major pharmaceutical companies and BABS at UNSW.听

    Members of the BABS faculty are Program participants and steering committee members of The Bridge Program.听

  • The MTPConnect听听Initiative, supported by the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF), focuses on developing the skills and training of Australia鈥檚 medical technology, biotechnology, pharmaceutical and digital health sectors.听

    The Bridge and BridgeTech REDI Program provides 20 funded industry placement fellowships per year for early and mid-career researchers, academics and entrepreneurs.鈥疞earn more about BABS听听in REDI.听

    The Founders Program is UNSW's platform to embed entrepreneurship on campus. It supports students, staff and alumni to build entrepreneurship skills and establish real companies.听

    Research Making Impact (RMI) for academics听

    RMI鈥痠s a comprehensive four-week professional development program designed to support academics in collaboration with UNSW Founders and Knowledge Exchange. The program develops the confidence and capability to define the potential pathways to social, economic, cultural and environmental impact. RMI will build capabilities in critical interpersonal and technical skills required for the successful engagement of external partners, collaborators and funding bodies to make positive change in the world.   • UNSW is a member of the听听which鈥痗onnects鈥痬otivated second and third鈥痽ear PhD students and early career postdoctoral fellows (mentees) in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) with influential, high-level industry leaders (mentors) in a one-year industry mentoring and professional development program.听

    Current second and third year鈥疨hD students and鈥痚arly career postdoctoral fellows鈥痺anting to increase their understanding of industry, and build their skills, professional networks and future opportunities can鈥痸isit听听and enquire at the听.听听

  • 听(APR.Intern) is Australia鈥檚 only national PhD internship program spanning all sectors and disciplines.鈥疭upported by the Australian Government, Department of Education, Skills and Employment and MTPConnect鈥檚 Researcher Exchange and Development within Industry (REDI) initiative, the program connects PhD students with industry through short-term paid research projects. The program empowers students to thrive in a practical research environment.
