Arts, Design & Architecture
School of Built Environment

I am an established interdisciplinary artist and academic based in the ArchitectureDiscipline in the Faculty of Arts, Design & Architecture at UNSW Sydney. I trained in Architecture at the University ofAdelaide (1993-1998) and was awarded my PhD in Visual Arts from Sydney Collegeof the Arts, University of Sydney, in 2011. I have lived in Adelaide, London andMunich and am now based in Sydney.

My work explores notions of essentiality and minimalism in architectural spacethrough embodied practice. My work ranges from large-scale immersive and site specificinstallations and constructions, to film, painting, textiles, printed andperformative works. Through choreographies of the everyday, and specificallythrough walking practice, I explore the augmentation of space through subtlerealisations of forgotten and intangible spatial forces. I am always endeavouring todiscover the ‘essential’ purpose of architecture and identify its minimumconditions; my principal interest is in forms of space-making that often escapeattention, including ephemeral, immaterial and unlikely forms of architecture.Recent projects have focused on walking, hiking and climbing with architecture inall its myriad forms — all forms which provoke the disciplinary boundaries ofarchitecture and suggest its expansion in practical and scholarly terms.

I haveworked in diverse settings including the Banff Centre (Walking & Art residency),Cité Internationale des Arts (Paris), Motion.Lab (Melbourne), AZ West (California) and theMuseum of Loss and Renewal (Collemachia). Most recently I have established A.W.E.Collective, a new collaboration with landscape architect Dr Joshua Zeunert and artistCathe Stack. My work has a strong ecological focus; I have made work that investigatesarchitectural space and atmosphere in relation to air, dust and particulate matter. In my teaching, I question the boundaries between art, architecture and landscapeand nurture a diverse group of interdisciplinary research students and early-careercolleagues. I teach a range of undergraduate and postgraduate architectural design studios that are increasingly informed by walking art practice. I am stronglyconnected to industry and am currently a Creative Industries Resident at theMuseum for Applied Arts & Sciences. My work has been exhibited throughoutAustralia and internationally in Canada, China, Denmark, Italy, Japan, New Zealandand the UK.
