Overview

The Master of Engineering Science (Energy Systems) is designed to provide a deep, broad range of knowledge about a variety of energy and power systems.

This postgraduate degree offers a wide range of theoretical and applications-based electives and is ideal for electrical engineers wishing to upgrade their skills in the ever-developing energy engineering sector.

The recent introduction and growth of intelligent power supply systems such as smart grids means that energy systems engineering is experiencing unprecedented growth.

This degree will help you develop skills to meet growing need for engineers who can interface renewable energy generation sources with the conventional electricity grid. You'll also understand the importance of electric motors in everything from smartphones to hybrid cars and satellites.

This postgraduate degree features complex, open-ended enquiry-based projects and plenty of opportunities to help you become a leader in the field.

You'll develop a systematic approach to problem-solving and learn to plan projects effectively, as well as gain key skills in order to analyse, interpret and communicate results proficiently.

The Master of Engineering Science (Energy Systems) will provide you with a deep understanding of a variety of power systems applications including the future energy-efficient electricity grid, automotive and aerospace applications, and marine systems.

By studying at UNSW School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications you will gain access to world-class facilities, such as the world’s largest university-based real-time digital simulation laboratory for simulating entire electricity grids.

We also host Australia’s largest high voltage laboratory, with facilities for high voltage testing (AC, DC and Impulse voltages) and condition monitoring of electrical equipment, with partial discharge detection equipment, transformer ratio arm bridges, recovery voltage testing, thermal testing and variable frequency testing of insulation.

Our power electronics and drives laboratory has extensive power electronic inverter/converter systems for operation with a range of motor drives and other applications such as superconducting fault limiting devices.

We're home to the Australian Centre for Renewable Energy laboratory which provides power quality assessment equipment for monitoring the characteristics of power electronic inverters supplied by renewable sources such as photovoltaic systems.

Each year our researchers work with over 100 industry and government organisations on industry and community-related projects.

Entry into the Master’s program requires completion of a 4-year Bachelor of Engineering degree (or equivalent) or 3-year Engineering Science degree in a cognate discipline. A minimum 65% average, or its equivalent, throughout the qualifying bachelor’s degree is mandatory.*

The Graduate Certificate in Engineering Science/Master of Engineering Science pathway does not apply to this specialisation

  • A 4 year Bachelor Degree with honours (equivalent) from any institution in a cognate discipline.

    1. A3 year Bachelor Degree (equivalent) from any institution in a cognate discipline.
    2. A 4 year Bachelor Degree with honours (equivalent) from UNSW institution in a cognate discipline.

English language requirements

Program structure

When you choose to study a Master of Engineering Science, you’ll choose from one of 26 specialisations which will help you make your next career move.

Within these specialisations your study will include:

You’ll be able to tailor your degree to your interests by combining courses in your chosen specialisation with elective courses.

You’ll also have the chance to work on a complex, open-ended enquiry-based research project.

Depending on your specialisation and your previous studies/professional experience you may study:

  • At least 4 Disciplinary Courses
  • At least 4 Advanced Disciplinary Courses
  • At least 1 Engineering and Technical Management Course
  • At least 3 enquiry-based courses (which includes a research project)
  • At least 4 elective courses (across Disciplinary, Advanced Disciplinary and Engineering and Technical Management courses)

Through the Disciplinary and Advanced Disciplinary Knowledge courses you’ll learn the technical knowledge and skills you need for your chosen specialisation. You’ll also update your knowledge in cutting-edge developments in your area of interest.

Engineering and Technical Management courses help you build skills in communicating and justifying professional decisions, employing ethical approaches to practice, and developing the abilities required for roles more focused on project and or staff management, leadership and strategy.

You’ll complete a research project in this degree within the enquiry-based courses. In this you can choose to developyourPostgraduate Research skills to assist with the research projectcomponentof the degreeor as your first step towards a Higher Degree Research (PhD) program.Or you can completea “Launching a Startup” course where you will be equipped withthe skills necessary to successfullycommercialiseyour ideas.
