Computer engineering is an engineering discipline that combines computer science and electronic engineering to develop computer hardware and software. As a computer engineer you鈥檒l become a leader in innovation and development of new technologies that听impact听the world.

Computer Engineers don鈥檛 just work with personal computer systems. You鈥檒l learn about听embedded systems for vehicles and operating systems for鈥痗onsumer electronics, telecommunications, medical equipment and more.听

The Bachelor of Engineering (Computer Engineering) is a four-year, full-time degree designed for students who want to pursue a career in computer engineering.听

This听degree is accredited听by听Engineers Australia and the Australian听Computer Society.听Part of听your study听involves听applying your skills through听60 days听of听approved听industrial training.听Your industrial training will give you a taste of a real-world professional engineering setting and the hands-on experience to hit the ground running.

You can take part in discipline electives including a Vertically Integrated Project and the Maker Games: Activation Hub 鈥 an award-winning rapid prototyping competition that includes access to industry experts and professional skills training.

You can choose to undertake this degree after completing a Flexible First Year at UNSW Engineering. Flexible First Year allows you to explore different engineering fields before choosing your specialisation, Computer Engineering is just one of the specialisations available. The first year of engineering study has a core of common subjects, plus a wide choice of electives, so you can figure out which one is right for you.

Adjustment Factors


We offer a range of adjustment factor schemes that reward students for academic performance and extra-curricular achievements. These schemes also take into account a range of personal and educational disadvantages that may have affected your studies.听


This scheme rewards students who perform well in Year 12 subjects that are relevant to their preferred UNSW degree. You may be awarded up to five points.听


This program recognises achievements in the areas of sport, academia, leadership and music at an elite level. You may be eligible for up to five points.


Factors such as illness, financial hardship, language difficulties or attending a particular school can mean you don't always get the best possible marks in Years 11 and 12. If one of these situations applies to you, submit an application for the Educational Access Scheme (EAS) via UAC. Eligible students can receive between 1 and 10 points towards their chosen UNSW degree.

Admission pathways

This degree is eligible for admission through our听Portfolio Entry Early Conditional Offer Scheme. Complete a submission to demonstrate your passion and performance in relevant subjects. Successful applicants will receive an early conditional offer with an adjusted ATAR entry requirement.

English language requirements

You may be asked to provide evidence of your English proficiency to study at UNSW depending on your educational background and citizenship. English language skills are vitally important for coping with lectures, tutorials, assignments and examinations - this is why UNSW requires a minimum English language competency for enrolment.

In your first year you might听study:

  • 听Two introductory听courses听in Mathematics
  • 听An introductory course in Physics,

You may also study an introductory course related to your specialisation of choice. These courses equip you with the skills required for the rest of your Engineering degree.听

All students听study听ENGG1000 鈥淚ntroduction to Engineering Design and Innovation鈥.听In this course听you鈥檒l听learn to think the way that engineers think,听developing听solutions听with limited听budget, time and resources.

In your second year听you鈥檒l undertake:

  • Courses from your selected specialisations
  • Core听courses to give you the fundamental knowledge in your area of interest

In听your third and fourth year you鈥檒l develop your knowledge further with a range of core and elective courses.听

During听your degree you鈥檒l听be required to听complete听two听General Education electives.听These courses听help you听broaden听your听education by completing听two courses from outside the engineering faculty strengthening your听cross-disciplinary thinking, developing a flexible approach and enhancing your critical analysis skills.

This degree also requires you听to complete 60 days of industrial training, which gives you some on the job experience before graduating.听This multidisciplinary educational approach connects students, academics and industry enabling听you听to develop the essential technical and professional听skills,听so听you听thrive in听your听future career.

How to apply

Applications for undergraduate study from domestic students (Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, Australian permanent humanitarian visa holders and New Zealand citizens) are processed by the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC).

On-time applications for admission usually close at the end of September each year for Term 1 admission. Late applications can be submitted, but a late fee will apply.
