STUDENT'S ARTWORK

ARTIST STATEMENT

I created my animation to explore how artists can creatively combine 3D space and camerawork with 2D animation. I was inspired by anime and recent trends in animation that combine 3D and 2D techniques. My animation’s narrative is very simple and is about the main character falling asleep and entering a dream sequence, which allows me to play around with techniques to build suspense. For this animation I re-used and edited an environment I created in Maya for my 3D vis 2 course; and did all the 2D animation in Clip Studio Paint. I used a greybox play-blasted version of the environment for the camera–work and layout, then drew my character over it to create the rough for my 2D animation. I used After-effects to play with the camera a little more, and add some blur, as well as composite my 2D animation with 3D and add some effects. I also rotoscoped the walking sequence.

Artwork medium: Maya, Clip Studio Paint, Adobe After-Effects

ARTIST INTRODUCTION

Hi, I’m Melinda Chen, I’m a 3rd year Media Arts student specialising in Animation and 3D Visualisation. I like all forms of animation and video games, but my art is mainly influenced by anime. I hope to work on all sorts of animation productions in the future and keep improving. Thank you for reading this and watching my animation from my Major Project 2 course. I hope you enjoy it.
