Postgraduate
Do you want to increase your knowledge in materials science and engineering? Put your analytical skills to the test to solve some of the world's most difficult problems?聽 If so, the postgraduate coursework and research programs offered by the School of Materials Science & Engineering at UNSW Sydney are the perfect place to start.听 Various postgraduate degree programs are offered, both in coursework and research.
Coursework program
The聽Master of Materials Technology聽is a one- to two-year full-time program. It is designed for graduates wishing to acquire expertise in the design, selection, use and performance of modern materials. It is suitable for graduates with Science, Engineering, Technology, or related backgrounds. The program provides a comprehensive, yet flexible, study of the full range of materials, including ceramics, composites, metals, polymers, composites, nano- and nature-inspired materials. Students complete both a coursework component (75%) and a research component (25%).
Research programs
Our school's research programs focus on a broad range of areas in materials science and engineering, including topics in materials science, materials chemistry, and materials physics, as well as others on sustainable materials processing, recycling science, and advanced characterization techniques. We offer Master of Philosophy, Master of Science (Research), and Doctor of Philosophy programs that enable you to carry out original research on a project of your choice. About us
Our School has a long history of excellence in both teaching and research. In the 2023 QS World Rankings, materials science was ranked 38th聽in the world (of some 600+ materials schools). A state-of-the-art building and some of the world's most cutting-edge equipment allows for fabrication, characterisation, and analysis of every class of material.听
Teaching and research in the School cover a broad range of materials science and engineering topics, including (among many others):
- particular material types, such as metals, ceramics, polymers, composites, bio- and nature-inspired materials;
- the functionality of a material, such as its electrical, magnetic, electromechanical, and electrochemical behaviour;
- materials processing, from extraction of metals and their ores through to the behaviour of materials during solidification, thermomechanical processing, and additive manufacturing;
- the response of materials to extreme environments, such as high & low temperatures, high pressures, stresses & strain rates, through to severe oxidation & corrosion conditions;
- understanding the structure, properties & behaviour of materials through computational modelling & machine learning, and
- the creation of sustainable materials through innovative manufacturing and recycling processes.
With such a breadth of exciting research topics, we consistently recruit outstanding students from a wide variety of backgrounds in science, engineering and technology.
