Ughhh鈥istakes. We all hate making聽them,聽but the fact is that making mistakes is a part of life. Whether you stuffed up an exam question you knew how to do,聽did something silly at work聽or didn鈥檛 play your best game in an important聽sports聽trial,聽we鈥檝e all made mistakes which seem like the end of the world.聽With the right mindset, however, it鈥檚 possible to turn these聽鈥淎HHH moments鈥澛爄nto positive experiences聽which enable you to grow, develop and learn so you don鈥檛 do the same thing in the future! What鈥檚 not to love?
After talking to聽some聽current students聽in聽UNSW鈥檚 Women in Engineering Society聽(WIESoc),聽we found that聽there are three聽pathways you can take when you make a mistake:聽
- Get upset by it and聽avoid the activity聽to聽ensure you don鈥檛 repeat the mistake.聽
- Pretend the mistake never happened and move on with your life.聽
- Accept the mistake, analyse what went wrong (and right!) and then commit to making a change.聽
Whilst number three is obviously the most difficult, it is ultimately the best option as it transforms mistakes from negative聽experiences聽to聽ones聽which initiate helpful change.聽聽
Now, imagine you鈥檝e just sat聽a聽big end of year exam. You studied hard, asked your teachers plenty of questions and had an early night. YOU WERE READY. You flew through the paper, confident with most of the questions.聽However, as you leave the exam, you overhear someone talking about聽the last question聽and you realise聽that you聽read the instructions wrong. Don鈥檛 worry, we鈥檝e聽all聽been there聽(on multiple occasions聽[Symbol]聽). The important thing now is that you聽learn from聽this mistake to avoid repeating it in the future.聽So, how should you go about this?聽
First off, you need to accept that you made a mistake and that聽this聽is聽OKAY! As聽WIESoc聽2020 President Angela advises,聽鈥渕ake聽yourself comfortable with failure because it facilitates change.鈥 This is easier said than done, and it鈥檚聽tempting聽to blame others聽or try聽to聽forget聽that the mistake聽happened. But owning up to your mistake and then taking action will serve you well throughout life.聽
After you鈥檝e come to terms with making the mistake, it鈥檚 reflection time.聽Fourth-year student聽(and one of聽WIESoc鈥檚聽Vice Presidents for 2020)聽Hasara聽advises 鈥減inpointing exactly what went wrong and also figure out exactly what went聽right!...when making mistakes聽there are still good actions聽and intentions鈥nd it鈥檚 important to聽not just harp on your failure鈥.聽聽
Once you鈥檝e identified what went wrong聽& right, it鈥檚 time to 鈥渢hink of ways you can improve to avoid these mistakes in the future鈥, according to聽WIESoc聽Secretary聽Jemima. For our exam example, this might be going slower in exams or forcing yourself to read the question thrice (I swear by this!).聽聽
Whatever your聽proposed聽solutions聽are, it鈥檚 important that you act聽on聽these changes. Angela summed this up beautifully:聽鈥淟et your mistakes motivate you to try harder, practice more, revise more and be more attentive. The more you practice, the more you will learn from your mistakes and be able to tackle any challenges that life might throw at you鈥.聽
So,聽this聽month聽I encourage you all to聽actively make mistakes and聽realise that聽they鈥檙e not聽life-defining and can facilitate聽huge聽growth.聽It鈥檚 hard and it doesn鈥檛 always make you feel the best, but ultimately it is only by failing that we can learn to succeed (as corny as that may sound!)聽
