SOVS Paper of the Week: Water and contact lenses are not a good mix. We know that contact between water and contact lenses, either through handling contact lenses with wet hands, showering or swimming in contact lenses or using water to rinse contact lenses or storage cases are all associated with a higher risk of eye infections and inflammation. This study looked at these behaviours in contact lens wearers and in a randomised controlled trial examined whether providing a visual reminder on their storage cases as a prompt to avoid water could change wearer behaviour. We found that not only did wearers reduce their water contact but the level of bacterial endotoxin in the storage case was also reduced in wearers with the visual reminder on their storage case compared with wearers receiving written compliance information.
