Students learning in the Medicine & Health facilities at the UNSW Kensington campus

Using physical activity to build healthier communities

Exercise science explores the impact of exercise on the body. Exercise scientists gain knowledge across a range of subdisciplines such as biomechanics, motor control and exercise prescription. Exercise scientists draw upon this knowledge to prescribe exercise programs that help people improve their health and performance.

Exercise physiology expands on the exercise science skillset by using exercise as a rehabilitative and preventative therapy. Exercise physiologists manage a wide range of chronic diseases, including:

  • musculoskeletal disease (e.g., osteoporosis)
  • cancers
  • pulmonary disease
  • cardiovascular disease
  • metabolic conditions
  • neurological conditions
  • mental health conditions

UNSW Medicine & Health is creating the leaders of tomorrow. We have connections with some of Australia鈥檚 best hospitals, private practices and health organisations. You鈥檒l be learning in world-class facilities across our Kensington campus, rural and metropolitan teaching hospitals, and research centres and institutes. Hands-on training starts in year one, giving you time to grow as a healthcare professional. We offer a broad range of professional placements to ensure you become a well-rounded clinician.

Your future as an allied health professional

With a background in exercise science and exercise physiology, you鈥檒l have the skills to care for both healthy patients and those with chronic conditions. You鈥檒l be able to work across a wide range of healthcare settings, including:
